Could anyone out there tell me if there is a book or books, printed in English, specifically dealing with gardening (vegetables), for the Mid Alentejo region of Portugal.
Also, is there anyone who can tell me the name and where I can get that "sort of matted grass " they use in hot climates. The stuff that survives the extremes of climate and lack of water. |

| Sorry can't help re the veg, there are various books on Spanish gardening at www.bookworldespaña.com but most seem to be tropical gardens. May I suggest you look around for a local with a garden producing veg and ask the owners advice (even if you don't speak the language yet, and its phrase book in hand,) I'm sure they will be happy to help and it would also give you an intro into local life. The grass you need isn't usually for sale here - you just go to where there is some and pick up runners and then plant them. As long as there is a node it will take so each piece will probably provide about ten bits to plant. At the moment my son is planting his lawn with my edgings! My neighbour has a tiny veg garden and at this time he has winter lettuce, cauliflower, cabbage, broad beans and onions. Later he has tomatoes, egg plant, peppers and cucumbers climbing the fence. |
