WANTED: Habek mint and Mentha gattefossei
| | |
Posted by janus59 (My Page) on Mon, Nov 26, 07 at 13:26
Has anyone root cuttings available of Habek mint (popular name Eastern mint)? This is a type of Mentha longifolia with narrow lavender-like leaves and with a strong scent. Mentha gattefossei has oblong leaves and is native to Marocco.

Hi I can't help with any of the wanted mints, but maybe we could do a trade in spring with some other mints, as I have a collection of about 60 different Menthas. And I am afraid that I can't stop my collection there, there are so many nice mints out there. Kind regards Lotte(Denmark)

I would also be interested to trade if possible - the mint I have is from Morocco but I don't know the name - see it on the link below. If you would like some cuttings, please let me know how best to send them so they don't spoil. They are just starting to come up again after the Winter. Joseph

Hello Joseph, Thank you for your offer. The mint variety that the picture shows is likely to be the Moroccan variety of Mentha spicata. It is sometimes offered as M. spicata var 'Nana'. I have this one in my collection. Kind regards, Janus

Thanks Janus In any case, can you (or anyone reading this) let me know how best to send mint cuttings? I tried once in a moist bag and they rotted. Regards Joseph

Joseph, Mint cuttings can be sent with some moist soil in a plastic bag. In my experience this works perfectly well if the transport takes not more than 5-7 days. In many cases priority mail is OK, but always check this with your local post agency. If priority mail takes longer than 7 days, I would recommend sending by express mail. Regards, Janus
