Hi, I was wondering about fig seedlings and which ones are the best quality? Also, how long does it take to start producing fruits and once it does start how many kg can one tree produce in a year? Thank you.

RE: figs

In Italy there are a lot of varieties. one of better is Kadota (Dottato), (that overall is parthenocarpic).
The main ones are:
Albo
Batignanese
Paradiso
Verdino
Gentile
Troiano
Brogiotto Bianco
Brogiotto Nero
Pissaluto
Negretta
Natalino (that fruit three time).
San Piero
Every region has however its own varieties, or their name of the (same?) varieties.
A fig normally begin to produce in two-three years, but real production begin in the fifth one.
As you may know there are parthenocarpic varieties and pollenized ones.
The pollenized needs a "male" tree, inhabited by the wasps that carry pollen, the wasp do not support temperatures lower than -9°C (16°F).
The quantity produced every year depends if it is a sigle or double fruiting variety, depends also from dimension of tree.
A single big tre in adequate condition may be produce 150 kg (300 lbs) of fruits.

RE: figs

Thank you for the info. I would also like to know a little bit more.
How many meters apart do the trees need to be planted?(lxw)
Which are the best varieties to be planted to produce by early spring and late fall to be able to be eaten fresh, dried, or made into jam?
When the figs are planted, in the summer do they need to be watered until they they are small or to have a hose and have water drops on the plant like for a kiwi?
I am from the region around Zadar, Croatia and I would like to grow figs there because the land is good for figs and I would like to grow around 1500 trees there.
Would you be able to tell me a little bit more about the growth and the procedures to go through while raising the figs or if you have a CD or something outlining the procedures to go through.

Thank you in advance.
