Fico seeds, smokve

Spedito da milos (My Page) il

Posadio sam seme od smokve. Niknulo je nekoliko "mladica" smokava. Da li ce to biti prave smokve koje ce moci da radjaju smokve za jesti ili ce to biti nesto divlje sto nikada nece proizvesti plodove? Hvala, Milos.

RE: Fico seeds, smokve

Sorry Ugo, I will try in english language.
I bought dried figs for personal consumption, in a little bag (284 grams) from Italy. I took some seeds and put them into the soil. After some time little fig trees started to grow.
My question is; are they going to be real fig trees and produce figs in the future that I can eat them or are they going to be wild figs? Italian people know a lot about figs that is why I am trying to post it on Italian Forums.
Thank you my dear neighbours. Milos (pronounced Meelosh).

Milos,
your experiment sounds weird! :-) I mean, I did grow date palms from supermarket dates but you're the first one I know doing it with figs. Btw it's nice to hear the seeds sprouted, while I had bet not, as they're usually oven dried (50-60C?).
Quite sure what you're going to get are wild figs, always hard/unripe and almost unedible. But, obviously, there's a little chance they will bring palatable fruits.. so let them grow and let us know!
Anyway if you want some cuttings from selected varieties feel free to ask me next spring.

Ciao
Vincenzo

I have a very small Ficus carica Fico, last year it produce 6 fruits, the birds got three, I ate one, and have kept two in a bowl, so that they are slowly drying up.

What do I do next, can I use the seeds and what should I do to raise them to seedlings?

As far as growing trees from seeds bought at food shops, Ginkgo nuts bought from Chinese food stores work extremely well, but you must have the knowledge as to how to bring them to germination, which I do and if anyone wants it write directly to me.

Nigel
