Rules in Italy

What if any, are the restrictions of bringing plants with soil into Italy? Is it as strict as the US? Please let me know. I can't bear the thought of leaving some of my plants behind and I want to fly with some of them in my hand luggage.

RE: Rules in Italy

Ciao Mandy!

Although it is in general not as strict as in the US, I'd rather make sure there won't be any problems at all. If you’re moving with all your belongings (i.e., furniture, etc, shipped to your new address in Italy), then you have hired a custom broker to handle it; he/she should be able to inform you properly. If you are only taking checked and hand luggage in the flight, then you can contact your closest Italian Embassy or Consulate and/or US Embassy or Consulate in Italy. You can also contact the Italian Customs Office themselves.

Anyway, I bet you’ll be amazed by the climate, plants, and of course, the lovely spontaneity of Italians!
In addition, you’ll be able to grow all kinds of herbs.

I sincerely wish you so much success! (being partly Italian –I’m Argentinean, it’s a dream for me to live in Italy!) Enjoy it!!!

Saluti!
Carol

As far as I know, it is possible to introduce limited quaqntities of plants (12-15) to Italy for strictly personal use only, without phytosanitary certificate. Anyway, you should present the plants for the phytosanitary inspection in the airport of entry, that could be quite time consuming
