I wish I took a photo...help me find the name of this plant

I saw a plant on the island of Ischia last month that looks like a big artichoke. It is a succulent I suppose. The "arichoke" top was very very big & it grew on a skinny stem. They were all over, mixed in with cactis & other plants.

Se io potessi, vorrei provare ad aiutare questa persona! Cosi', provo a tradurre la Sua domanda! Per favore, mi scusate per gli sbagli... ho studiato l'italiano all'universita', ma non lo parlo o lo scrivo tanto questi giorni!

"Ho visto una pianta sull'isola di Ischia il mese scorso che assomiglia ad un grande carciofo. Credo che sia un succulento. La parte superiore del "carciofo" era molto grande e crescevo su un stelo sottile. Le piante erano dappertutto, ed erano misto con cactus e altre piante."

Was it a fruit? I've seen a fruit that looks like an artichoke but the colouring is reddish like a mango. It was called Dragon fruit. Could that be it?

Whatever you saw, I am unfamiliar with.
