Italian Growing Zones?

Spedito da pazzaglia z8/9 CA (My Page) il

I wanted to know if a map, similar to that of the "USDA Zone Hardiness" of the USA, which describes the Italian growing zones in which certain plants can grow.

For exmaple, I live in America in California and I'm considered to be in Zone 9 - but since I live near the bay and it's a bit colder I'm actually right between zones 8 and 9.

The "zones" in America are defined by the average minimum temperatures during the year.

Does something like this exist for Italy?

Thanks!

Ciao Laura,
guess you've already found a lot of Europe USDA zone maps. There are several sites on the net.. yet showing the same two pictures, which are too rough to give you the real thing, better look at
http://www.i-h-g.it/clima.htm
that's the zone-map based on the flora climate classification by Koeppen.

Hope this helps

Vincenzo

Very nice temp zone map for Italy. Thanks for the link. I wonder if you can tell me what area/zone would be considered the Northern Italy piedmont area, and perhaps a town within the area. Thanks in advance for any info. R

Piemont covers a large area containing different climatic zones. Parts of piemonte are mountainous (alps) and other parts are plains or hilly or lakes. I have lived between Turin and Asti for nearly twenty years. My area is mostly a zone 8 but can sometimes go a few degrees lower. We can expect -10°c in january and 30°c in july. Hope that this helps. Karen

Thank you to everyone for your links and information. I have written an article and created a map to correspond the Italian Growing Zones with the USDA Hardiness Zone map.

Here it is, and.. enjoy!

Very nice map, thank you! I, too, live up in the hills a bit, and while it's supposed to be zone 8, we are at least several degrees cooler than Bologna itself at any given time. And it SNOWED yesterday!!!

Nice work, indeed!
Anyway I've to comment that the hottest zones in Italy can be extimated as USDA z10 not 11.

Ciao
Vincenzo
