Olea europaea in a container

Spedito da cactus_dude Albuquerque (My Page) il

Hello

My apologies for not posting this in Italian, but I don't know Italian!

I have a few questions regarding a potted fruitless olive tree I recently bought. The tree is in a 5 gallon container.

It is very cold right now where I live, so I have it in my house, where it gets about 3 hours of direct sunlight per day. Is this enough? How often should I water it at this time of year?

Also, some of the leaves have turned a yellow color. Is this normal, or is it something I should be concerned about?

Thank you for your help.

I suppose you're in Z7b ("is very cold" is not sufficient).
Please indicate the winter minimum absolute temperature, and how long is maintained.
Normally olive trees don't have yellow leaves. If has, this means that suffers, (except of course if they are two or three).
The young trees on pot resist (outside) -6, -8°C (up to 22°F), (and quite more if the the pot is buried floor-to floor on ground (garden) and protected by burlaps or straw, normally inside a room the light is not sufficient, however if it is inside home needs some little (little)watering (because the climate is warm), DON'T EXCEED IN WATERING, THE OLIVE PLANT IS VERY DROUGHT RESISTANT, AND SUFFER IF WATERD IN EXCESS, (water don'tn has to stay at the basis of the pot), the plant has to be turned for have light from every direction.
The ideal situation is on bright (not heated) veranda or cold greenhouse.
TILL temperature are near frost (28°F in night, and UPPER in day) is A LOT BETTER if plants stay outside in protected site (e.g. along a home wall, with "shouders" protected from cold winds by wall, and with burlaps around the pot and the trunk, or better with the pot buried.
Please remember that the resistence to cold is dependent from variety of Olea (there are a lot of differences), cold resistant varieties can support temperature dropping, having little damage, up to 6-8°F (Adult tree). The olive tree is adapt for sunny sites.
Good hope, Sergio

SergNic-

Molte Grazie! Voi avere una buona probabilita di olivo.

I have been watering my olive only when the soil is dry to a depth of one inch. Lately I have been placing it on a sunny patio outside, from 12 noon until sunset, because this is the warmest part of the day. This seems to be helping a little.

The zone I live in is 7a; minimum temperature is 0 to 5 degrees fahrenheit. In the city I live in, there is only one olive tree planted outside, in the courtyard of a church. Other than that, it is too cold for Olea europaea. However, we do have several vineyards here which produce popular wines. There are grapes planted in my backyard. I think they are Thompson's Seedless.

I am trying to grow olives from seed that I collected fresh in Arizona. Hopefully I will have success.

Buona giornata...

Ciao cd, The limit low temperature for normal trees of olive is 10-13°F, I repeat that is important the variety, because I'm living in North Italy, where the south-varieties (bigger dim. of fruit) are damaged by frosts, some local ones as "Taggiasca" instead is resistant, also if producing small fruits, but a lot appreciated for oil. Adult plant are a lot more resistant to cold, in the ground ad deep of one feet rarely the temperature drops lower to 5, 10°F, for this externally to home the plants resist better if buried, the soil in a pot instead assume, in few hours, the same temperature of the wind. Is reported resistence to cold up to 0°F, but I'don't know variety of said olive tree, and... fruit production. If there is quite long summer, and in summer have dry climate, may be no one problem to cultive bunch grapes up to 0°F, of every varieties, also if european. The only problem is that the european one needs more cures for wet climate diseases in summer (Oidiun and Peronosora). Also if these cures are not difficult and not expensive (sulfur, Copper salts). A good variety quite resistant, here, for fruit and wine is "Moscato d'Amburgo". regards, Happy new year, Sergio

If the tree is in a pot outside has to be more watered, it is sufficient that the water don't stagnate on the bottom of the pot.
If the pot is buried on the ground may be better for cold.
