A freezing garden in sunny Cote d'Azur

By the side of a mountain river in a valley only 15 minutes from the coast. Very cold (-4 degrees) and damp in the winter. Very hot (35+ degrees) and dry in summer.

It is a constant battle to keep plants alive. Does anyone have any suggestions for interesting flowering plants that may be tough enough to survive.

Also any suggestions for plants that could survive on the riverbank that wouldn't mind getting submerged by the river when it floods.

Thanks in anticipation

Carole

Hi Carole!
I only joined yesterday and Ive just read your posting.
For up to 30cms water..how about Iris pseudacorus- Hottonia palustris .
or for shallower water Iris laevigata -Calla plustris.

I have a boggy patch(bottom of garden) and grow Iris ensata -primula denticulata-Salix alba-primula bullyana and I find mimulus grows well there too.Dont know if this is any help....Daisy

Hello, Carole,
if my answer doesn't come in too late, I would advise you to have a look at the site of Filippi, a specialist in dry plants. You'll find there a good description (in French!)of each flower or shrub, often a photo, and details about its resistance to the cold:www.jardin-sec.fr (or com.?).I've found there very interesting things.
Good luck

Pépinière Filippi's web site is www.jardin-sec.com. You might also check out the Mediterranean Garden Society's Branch in your area:
MGS South Eastern Branch page.

I know some of their members live in the hills behind the Côte d'Azur, and have similar challenges.

Hi carole

You can consider the Pierre Cuche garden plantlist in his books or also going for a walk with hm in his garden. It's full of good ideas, so beautifull and he and his wife are charming.

Read the Pierre Cuche book is a good idea.
You have many plants that agree this températures, around Mediterranée et also from China and South US.

For riverbank, you have by exemple Hibiscus coccineus, Hibiscus moscheutos, Thalia dealbata, from South US.

For your boggy area, I suggest a variety of Astilbes in all colours, Hostas, Reed Mace (which will actually look quite natural beside the river and you might get some birds nesting in them) and the ever-popular Zantedeschias. If you plant these close to the river, you will never need to do anything else to them, apart from keeping the slugs off the hostas and zantes.

I am moving to the Cannes area this Sept. so I will be very interested to know if the above work for you, as they are some of my favourite plants.

As per the first problem (hot in summer cold in winter) I'd go to the American gardenweb forum and ask on any of the midwestern states what they like. Many midwestern states have very cold winters and hot summers.
