Gardening in Sicily?
| | |
Posted by global_gardener (My Page) on Mon, Jan 19, 09 at 9:36
| We are moving to Sicily this summer and I am eager to get information about gardening while we are there (three years). Here are a few questions:
Is vermicomposting easy to do while there? If I bring a worm bin, can I find worms locally?
Any books, blogs, or websites recommended for gardening in Sicily?
Any advice or contact with other gardeners currently in Sicily would be great!
Thank you,

| We are stationed in Sicily, too! I started gardening last year here. I had decent results, but noticed that planting in our yards in next to impossible unless you want to spend a ton of money digging up the ground and replacing it with top soil. Our yards are made of clay. The nice thing about gardening here is that the season lasts forever! I started my seeds earlier this week and will be able to transplant them in about two weeks (to an outdoor greenhouse). I have found the best results using topsy-turvy planters for toms and cucs... it gets INSANELY hot here so you have to be 100% on top of watering your plants, too. Please email me with any other questions. I hope you will enjoy your tour here as much as we have enjoyed ours!! |

| Mommymia, thanks so much for your reply! I would love to hear more about it...especially as I try to figure out what to bring or leave behind. Still new to gardenweb and I couldn't figure out how to e-mail you. My e-mail is luciamorgan@yahoo.com....can you please send me an e-mail? When we lived in Japan, compost and topsoil were available for free on-base...I am guessing from your message that's not the case. Did you build a greenhouse or is there one available for public use? Not familiar with the topsy turvy planters you mentioned but I will do a little research on that. Anything else you recomend or anything you wish you had packed/stocked up on before PCSing? Do you have a compost system? Thanks again. Happy to make contact with another gardener! Lucia |
