What do you do for grass?

| I'm planting an allee of italian cypress and would like to put grass (or grass like plants) at their feet.
I live in an area that frequently freezes in the winter. We get tons of rain (measured by the feet) and in the summer it gets 90 degrees or higher.
I was thinking about clover? Your suggestions?

| If your clover flowers and you've got kids/dogs - be prepared for bee stings. I offer the following suggestions with caution: Ophiogon because I know it does well under a range of circumstances including close company with trees, or, possibly Achillea (yarrow) because it will withstand mowing and foot traffic, plus frost and heavy rainfall/high temps. Feathery leaf and dark green. Spreads by runners. Quite easy to control. Pennisetum clandestinum (kikuyu grass) makes a hard-wearing turf but requires regular attention to keep it respectful (otherwise it literally starts clinbing trees.) Fine for zones 9-12. Can be invasive if you have gardens by to your allee. Check with your local authority to be sure it is OK to plant in your area. |

| Thanx Vetivert8 for the suggestions. I had thought of the mini mondo grass (Ophiopogon), but don't know where I can buy enough of it to cover my area -- it's about 15' wide and 150 long. I can easily locate clover seed. But I guess I don't really want to plant clover if bees might be a problem. I didn't know that there ws a low growing ground cover yarrow. I'll have a look at that on the internet. I live in an area that's very sensitive to plants that can be invasive, so I don't think I want to try the pennisetum. This grassy area is mostly for looks, so foot traffic really won't be a problem. Anyone else have other suggestions? Thanx! |
