Roof garden

Hi everybody, I live in the south suburbs of Athens, Greece, in the top flat of a building. Last May I invested on transforming the terrace into a roof garden which looks terrific. I'd like to hear from other people who have roof gardens and exchange views and ideas. My main question today is this: I have put lots of laurel plants alongside the rails for privacy and safety and I was wondering why some of them have started having yellow leaves. As you might have gathered I am not an expert in gardening. Also, I have a dwarf pommeganate tree and I don't know if it needs any pruning and when. Thanks.

Although I haven't any roof garden(coz I have a backyardgarden), I can tell you that it is normal for evergreen trees/shrubs to shed some of their leaves before the plants leave their dormancy and start growing again. In reallity in most evergreen species the leaves live for about 15 months or so.
Another reason for your plants dropping off their leaves, is drought or excess water on the other hand.
Also some diseases may cause that.Check for black or brown spots on the yellowed leaves
In addition check for any mites(possible cause factor). If you can't see them , then check for their results(any disshaped leaves in top of the stem).
Coccoidae(insects) also can do such a damage on the leaves.See under the yellow leaves if any tiny white or brown spots exist(they are easilly removed with the fingers)
But there are cases that the most innocent things can cause damage(such as coke, shoaps etc)

As far as the pomegranate is concerned, that's the ideal season to prune it.Generally leave 3-4 central branches that are far enough from each other. Prune all the central branches, so as your plant can breath while on season.Don't prune all the secondary branches since pomegranate blooms on 2 yr old branches.

Good luck

George, thanks for the advice. The laurel plants actually have some dark spots and they are also dark on the stems where I pruned them in November. Is this normal? Sorry for the stupid questions but as I am a newbie and I really love my plants, I don't want anything to happen to them out of my stupidity.
Thanks again

Hi Miranda,
yes it could very well be some fungus or bacteria, causing these spots on your plants. If so,the survival of your plants depends on the virulence of that specific organism and the general status of your plants.
Since it's difficult to assess the disease(if there is) by only describing it, I would recommend that you take some leaves to an expert to give you something to treat it.Sometimes some diseases, if left untreated can destroy the infected plants.
As preventative measures you can use copper(which is allowed in organic farming also). It's gonna eliminate a wide range of fungi and bacteria. But if there is an agressive organism you have to use more specific products.

I hope it helps

PS if there is any means of adding pictures here, take a couple of, off your leaves and post them here.It may help me tell with more accuracy

I'm afraid I'm hopeless with computers (as well as with gardens) so I have no idea how to post a picture. If I can persuade one of my sons I might be able to do so over the w/e. Knowing them however, (you know, teenagers!) ÷ëùìü ôï âëÝðù. Thanks again

Hi - you could try Sedums - theyre easy to grow and won't give you heat and cold , wind or rain problems. They flower too!
