Climbing plants in Cyprus - help please

Posted by vera_gardener (My Page) on

I am looking for a fast growing evergreen climber to cover a trellis.

Although the weather here can get very hot indeed, I am slightly inland at approx 300mtr above sea level, so do get the occasional frost in the winter.

Any suggestions?

Vera

Hi vera

some fast growing evergreen climbing plants for your climate are the following:

Hedera canariensis. Many subspecies here. They have large leaves, grow fast and frost hardy. They have bicolor leaves.

Bougainvillea glabra sanderiana. It may prove marginal at your altitude, but it's worth trying. It is the hardiest bouganvillea. The purple one.

Also there are many Jasminum species out there with colors varing from yellow-white red, pink etc. They are frost hardy and grow really fast.

Another one evergreen climbing worth planting is Rhynchospermum jasminoides. Its flowers are extremely fragrant and is frost hardy also

good luck with whatever you choose

if you hesitate to try the bouganvillea for fear it freezes I can encourage you saying that I have seen many bougainvilleas (the variety I mantioned before) as high as 200-250m from the sea level in regions by the sea.
