African trees for Spain

| I am interested in growing african trees here in Andalucia. I have done some research, and think that common species of Acacia (thorn trees, note not Mimosa) and Rhus should do well. Back in South Africa, these hardy and drought resistant trees do well in parks, gardens, and nature reserves. They look great, and are not invasive. Looking for anyone in southern Spain who can offer advice or can recommend contacts. Many thanks. |

| I think you should have a good success rate. I have a seedling of Delonix Regia doing well and have seen it flower in this zone. I have just planted Baobab seeds, at my age I won't see the outcome but have younger friends with land who will give it a home. I also have a seedling of the Kigelia which suffers in the winter but is growing. Locally there is a piece of land which is enclosed with what we used to call 'Boma Thorn' and I have never seen such an effective hedge! I love tropical plants and perhaps due to my childhood in Africa find that any plant that interests me I have probably seen in my childhood although I can't remember it! As you say 'back in S.A' do you have any idea where I can obtain seeds of Massonia or Daubenya? |
