Getting calcium sulphate and magnesium sulphate in Greece?

Sas parakalo: Live in apartment near Nafplion, Peloponnese. Lots of big plantpots on balconies but need to improve soil mix, and counter-act our extremely alkaline water supply. Have been using vinegar when watering but not enough. Got great advice from "greenchem" on Container Gardening site. Now want to get calcium sulphate (gypsum), and magnesium sulphate ("Epsom Salts"). I know where there are farmaka suppliers for fertilisers, and I can speak some Greek, but as an Englishwoman I don't know the Greek or dimotika Greek for calcium sulphate and magnesium sulphate and - surprise! - these words are not in dictionaries. The local suppliers don't know (and why should they?) the words for what I am asking for. Is there anyone out there who can help with the language? (Charcoal, which I also need, is no problem! - vans come round the village at Easter and all summer selling good charcoal. Very nice with the local lamb...and goat...)
Many thanks, and Greece is a lovely country.
Oh, and apart from the language, if anyone has similar conditions and good advice, I would be very grateful. Sas evharisto para para polu!

Hi Jenny

From a quick research that I've done on the net I haven't found any supplier, but I know there are, since it's used here in Greece to decrease the Ph value in some fields. If I find anything in future, I'm gonna let you know.
Calcium Sulphate is called "gipsos" in Greek (the i is pronounced as in "link" and the intonation in the i).When you ask for "Gipsos" you say "Gipso"-"Ãýøï"(accusative not nominative).
As for the epsom salts,it's uncommon here. You may find some in pharmacies or healthcare shops. They are called "ÊáèáñôéêÜ Üëáôá Ìáãíçóßïõ" or "Áããëéêü ¶ëáò".

You may want to use a more common product to decrease the Ph of your soil, which is cheap and easy to find.It is sulphuric iron or green vitriol or "karabogia" in Greek (the intonation in the second a, the a are pronounced as in "up", the i as in "in", the g as the Y in "yesterday".

good luck

Thanks Amato, wonderfully helpful advice. (Though the greek letters you tried to type don't work on this website).
But - gypsos and karabogia were in my Greek to English dictionary - compete with tonos marks - so I will call at the farming chemical shop next week.
And will definitely report on this site about the progress of my plants this year.
Thank you so much again.

I don't know if you have found in Greek market "calcium sulphate (gypsum), and magnesium sulphate ("Epsom Salts")"
I live in Athens and I am an amateur grower of many plants-trees etc.
Anything you need please contact me at : olma156@yahoo.gr
thanks

Hello form Athens, Greece to all of you.
Just a question. You are talking about gipso or ãõøïò for plants, but gipso (or gypsum in latin), is a white powder material which is used by builders mixed with water. When water evaporates, it becomes strong like cement. How it can be used for plants??

Hi stemn

northern Greece here (and macedonia specifically).
There's plain gypsum for agricultural use.It ameliorates the structure of the soil, enriches it with calcium and raises its Ph.
Now as for the gypsum used for bone fractures, it may be used in combination with other substances so as to rock harden it.

Sometime in the past I used some gypsum to raise the Ph of the peat.It has pale white colour and looks like flour.I don't remember though where I bought it from.

Many thanks Amato, maybe is another kind of gypso, perhaps the one they use for artistic works?? This you can find in any "kingaleria" shop. Is that so?
