Pittosporum

Hello I am new to the forum.
I live in the South of France approximately 35 kilometres due North of St Tropez.
We were recently (two weeks ago ) in Barcelona and then on the Costa Brave at Begur. We saw a plant which had been cultivated in every form from small shrub to 4mtr tree. We believe it to be a Pittosporum. It had the same flowers and leaves, although a darker green, as the the Pittosporums we have in our garden but the interesting thing for us is that the perfume was so strong. Much stronger than ours. Can anybody identify the shrub for us with the exact type and say if it might survive here as we are a little cooler in Winter, I think, than Begur. It seemed that they were in advance of us by about two weeks or more. But that could have been, perhaps, because it was coastal.
Many thanks in advance for any information and advice.

| Hi Joshe, I live in Barcelona city. All I can tell you without a picture or a more detailed description is that P. tobira is very frequent here -we're even bored of seeing it. I don't know the variety or cultivar, but you can buy one in every nursery of the country. Yes it smells beautifully (we call it China's jasmin), and has dark green leaves and interesting fruits, like tiny grenades. It's a pitty that they usually cut it to a 1m high mess, but it looks gorgeus when left to grow. I guess it will stand the cold, it seems rather hardy, but maybe the differences in colour and smell are due to our climate or sun. |
