Begonia rex and similar...

| I have some begonia rex outdoors in a shady place. Most do very well. But what about other begonias? Rhizomatous ones? Tuberous..? Begonia venosa? Etc...? Does anyone have some experience to share about these colourful plants? How do they take winter cold? |

Hi, I can't tell you if Begonias are very cold-resistant, but I don't think winters in Algarve are too hard, are they? As far as I know, the worst enemy of begonias is the excess of water, as they are very sensitive to fungus. Provide them with a fast-draining sustrate. |

| Thanks! The winters are usually very mild, but we may have occasional cold spells with temp. dropping to almost zero. Frost is very rare. The soil in my garden is fast-draining due to a lot of rocks. I have tested several Begonias outdoors. Some do very well, others perish. Recently I have planted B. hatacoa and B. venosa. Time will tell if they live through the winter... |
