 o
Bay Tree

Hello from Algarve, Portugal.

I have a 5 foot Bay Tree in a large clay pot on the kitchen patio. I brought it from the Isle of Wight (UK) about five years ago and does well except for getting sooty mould in the winter which I just wash off with soapy water.

All of a sudden the center of the leaves have turned brown. I am wondering if this is because I hose it at night to freshen it as our temps have been in the high 90s and then perhaps the sun burns it?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Victoria

I suspect it's simply a matter of sun burn during the intensely hot days you've been having.

Getting water on the foliage has nothing to do with that.

Hello Joe

Firstly, I must apologise for not responding to you sooner but I eventually gave up looking for a reply ... and the summer has been filled with visitors.

We haven't been as hot this summer as we have been in the past and several shrubs got 'burnt' leaves hence my thinking it was overhead watering.

Anyway, I picked off the offending leaves, hand washed the leaves with soapy water (a very tedious and time-consuming task) and all is fine now with lots of lovely new growth!
