Transporting plants

Hi
We are shortly retiring to Rhodes and as my son is taking over the house in the UK, it will probably end up a wild garden.
As our Greek house is a new build on 2000sq metres, I would like to take some plants with me, especially my large collection of hemerocallis, iris, crocosmia, nepeta etc. Has anybody any suggestions as to the best way. The container will probably leave the end of September and I am told it could take around six weeks.
If I sent them courier it would take around 7-10 days. Could I bare root them and take them as excess baggage. I understand October is the ideal time to plant so would like at least to make a start this year.
Thanks

| Barlews, all the best to you on your move. You could bare root your plants and take them as excess baggage but you may be wiser to package them up and have your son send them to you once you are installed. If your property is new you will probably have to prepare the ground etc for your plants and this could take time (and it could still be pretty hot so not ideal conditions for keeping bare root plants around). Have you thought of having them sent to you by post once you are installed - I just mention it as I received a kiln (yes a glass fusing kiln!) in just three days sent from England to Spain by post!! Also may I suggest that you leave samples of your plants in your UK garden, even if your son lets it go wild there will be replacements if your first plantings in Rhodes don't take. Anyway all the best in your new home and garden - enjoy your retirement! |
