Dying (?) ivy and lavender

| Hello, I have the following 2 plants, a small hanging ivy variety and a lavender that look like they're dying. The ivy's leaves look like they are burnt, while half of the lavender plant has shed its leaves and looks like dying. Any ideas?

| Hi patriot Your ivy seems to have passed some kind of physical shock. Have you ever left it unwatered and have seen it near death out of water starvation? If so that's why the lower leaves have dried and new ones have emerged. Another reason might be infection with mites.Observe the down side of the leaves for any possible microscopic mites. They are yellow or red in colour and are very common in balconies. Your lavender is probably water-logged.Do you water it with an automatic irrigation system?Does the soil get too wet?Do you water it more than twice weekly?I can't think of another reason of its sickness apart from sun deficiency.Aromatic herbs need too much sun.Sun exposure indeed increases their medicinal value. If it is in the shade, it may be the main reason why it gets so unhealthy.Just consider those two factors. BTW how did you entered those fotos in your message? |

| Thanks for the reply, you are right on both plants. The ivy was forgotten unwatered at my mother's house and I took it at my place now. What should I do with it? clip all the leaves or leave it like that? how often should I water it? do those ivys need lots of water or not? There are no signs of any infection anywhere. The lavender was indeed getting water every 2 days as the weather is a lot hotter now + some spraying of water on the leaves early at night of some very hot days. If I water it less will it revive or should I do anything else as well? thanks PS I uploaded the photos at imageshack.com and once you upload them they give you the code to use in forums (use the one with >IMG< and not the one with [IMG]) |

| thanks for the foto tip If you think the ivy has no sign of infection and it;s due to drying up, then just clean out the dead leaves and fertilize the plant every 15 days.It will get stronger that way. The lavender needs sun immediately and less water also.Try to move it to the most sunny place of your balcony.Water it only when the soil has dried up, not earlier.I have had a lavender in my garden for nearly 15 yrs and watered it almost never. But don't try that yourself.Yours is in a pot, so it needs some water. Good luck |
