 o
Mediterranean plants in a South coast UK garden ?

Hi there

Could you please kindly advise me on suitable Mediterranean garden style plants for my garden ?

Basic info is 27ft long by 18ft wide enclosed garden with good soil in beds, but mostly slabs.

Growing lonicera periclymenum belgica, lonicera periclymenum belgica serotina Florida and hall's Prolific plus passiflora caerulea and passiflora Constance. Also have bay tree and oleander in pots (oleander overwintered in the house previously but now in bloom and 4 or 5yrs old), standard blue wisteria and lots of herbs plus a Brown Turkey fig.

Rarely gets below 5C in Winter, only 2 or 3 frosts a year, winters are wet, August temperatures well over 30C and 25C in the shade. Prevailing wind off sea (10 mins walk) from South to North mere breeze in Summer, up to Force 10 in Winter. Trellis is doing excellent job of slowing it down.
Have a pergola in the SW corner too that is very sheltered but sunny.

Cordyline, phormium, buddleia, fuchsias, palms, crocosmia, Californian lilacs all grow extremely well here but husband doesn't like them :( Strawberries, mint, parsley and rhubarb find the summers too hot south facing and just about manage in partial shade.

Any ideas gratefully received thank you !

I live in a Mediterranean climate and most of my plants are from S. Africa and Central and South America. There are a lot of interesting bulbs and succulents (aeoniums, aloes etc) from S. Africa that may work well in your climate if you have fast draining soil. Things to consider planting are:

Succulents for borders
Alstroemeria – make good cutting flowers - Brazil
Blood Lily (Scadoxus (Haemanthus) puniceus) – S. Africa
Hippeastrum
Homeria (Cape Tulip)
Lavender – Mediterranean
Rosemary – Mediterranean
Allysum – Mediterranean – fragrant and makes a nice border
Centranthus ruber – Mediterranean
Lavatera maritima - Mediterranean

The below link is to my garden and that may give you some additional ideas.
