Lemon tree in Madrid?

I've got a miniature lemon tree in a pot, it seems ok, one baby lemon is growing, I covered it during the frosty days and wonder if I should help it along in any other way since lemon trees don´t do well in Madrid usually. Any advice?

Hello kimeta, I'm surprised no one has jumped on board to answer your question. Judging from This your climate seems very similar to some of the moderate elevations in the Southern San Jouquine Valley, here in California. Typically where lemons are marginally hardy, they are kept in pots and moved to more sheltered locations, however, covering with a blanket should be adequate protection so long as temps don't drop below -7 degrees centigrade. I'm not sure how well it would work below that.

Since it's a smaller lemon tree, in a pot you have several options. I put mine on rollers and move them into a carport during low frosts (less than 28F). Another possibility is to build a tent-like greenhouse from PVC tubing and clear plastic to hold in the heat. This is a good solution for small trees in the ground. No matter what you use, you don't want the plastic or the blanket to touch the tree. Once the tree gets established in the ground, it may be able to survive freezes ok. The top may die off, but it can grow back.
