I know there are machines that grind wood into mulch. Does anyone know a place online where I can purchase one for household use?
how much it might cost?

Go to Google.com and type in "wood chipper" or "mulcher equipment" or something similar and shop away! Toss in "Canada" to get more hits from vendors in your area. The larger ones aren't cheap though. I have a small garden chipper that takes small shrubs, branch trimmings etc. and it cost about $400.00 American. The one's that chew up branches 2" in diameter and larger are pretty pricey. The ones that chew up trees cost mucho dinero!

This place is not a bargain store, but you may try the website:

www.treetools.com

for Tree Tools in Lake Oswego, Oregon, USA.

They do distribute worldwide, and are a very reputable company to deal with.

What you want ranges from about $400 US dollars to maybe $3000 US dollars.

Sears (or maybe Sears Robuck) in the USA may still carry them, and I don't know if they have a catalog or ship them.

Any chipper shredder should do. Most hardware and garden center stores in the USA carry at least one type of chipper-shredder.

Of course, it depends on what kind of wood you want to turn into mulch. It has to be green, and most home-use chippers choke on anything more than about 2.5" diameter. Dry lumber will wear out chipper blades very quickly, and may even damage it.

Usually when I down a tree on my property, I shred the smaller stuff, chip the branches under 2", and turn the rest into firewood.

I mentioned this post to the TREE TOOLS men today.

They thought this is a better item to locate within your own borders, rather than have sent long distance.

Its a tool for someone with time on their hands they said.

You will want at least 5 hp. And 8hp or larger can be harsh on a womans joints to start due to compression.

Sears in the USA makes an electric one that may chip up to 1/2" and also shred leaves.

Maybe there is something in your area.

No, you do not need time to do your munching, you need strong arms to start most petrol run machines. I had a tiny electric muncher as a start, now am on my big 5hp machine, but with middle age I find it difficult to start, have to always ask my man to do it for me, which I strongly dislike as a very independent new age woman, so the next machine will be the biggest electric muncher. We have machines that will shred material up to 3cm (a bit over an inch). However, I can't see you ordering one from western Australia. Search google for options in your area :-)
