Mixed Shrub Border

Hello, how exciting! I've just decided to go with med plants for my sunny, Oakland, CA, west-facing mixed shrub border (front of house).

I'm not sure whether to plant a row of same type, or mix it up a bit. The border should take about a total of 10, medium-sixed shrubs. Does anyone have an idea on what kind of grouping might work (3-4 types) together?

Thank you for any/all ideas! I'll be on the site often!

I would go for mixing up different species, with different heights, widths and foliage.
I have a border in my house in Portugal about the same position as yours, but smaller.
I've planted there:

Echium candicans
Lavandula stoechas ssp stoechas
Protea cynaroides
Callistemon salignus

and they're doing pretty well

My favorites have always been lavender, rosemary, thyme, santolina (sorry, I don't the name in english), camomile and sage. Can you tell I just love aromatic plants? They all smell gorgeous, are very sturdy and can be used in the kitchen as well!

Lavenders are always a good choice for conditions similar to yours. I have several varieties and their differences in heights and shapes makes them interesting enough in themselves.

Other shrubs I have and do well in mixed borders are viburnums. I have the tinus cultivar (evergreen) and the opulus (deciduous). Both are unvaluable plants for Fall, Winter and Spring interest. I also have and love roses (mostly antiques and Austins), oleander, nandina domestica (species and the Firepower cultivar), hollies, pymelea, agapanthus, spireas, crape myrtle, arbutus unedo, budleias (to attract butterflies), daylilies, small conifers, succulents, etc.

For a nice Fall display try beautyberry (callicarpa americana) with Spirea Goldmound, naked ladies bulbs and ajuga Burgundy as a groundcover. Very pretty and easy care.

Vicky,
And any other interested gardeners from Northern California. You are welcome to come to our swap on October 26 in Walnut Creek and get some plants for your garden. Visit our swap site and you will see how it works or email me and I will be happy to tell you all about it. We always have plants for people who do not have any to trade and I have many Med. plants and tons of seeds that I would be happy to share with you.

The link to the swap is below. There are also a lot of photos - many of Med. plants and some of my garden.

Here is a link that might be useful: Northern California Swap Site
