Does the tree have thorns? If so, you are welcome to email your photos to me at nathan@sepman.co.za and I will check with my South Africa tree books. If the tree does not have thorns, probably Mimosa, an Australian Wattle. Regards

Many acacias bear "phyllodes", flatted petioles that take the place of true leaves. In your species, the phyllodes are found as immature "leaves" and the true leaves on the more mature stems are the finely pinnate (feathery) structures. You even show some intermediate forms. There are many species of Acacia that bear phyllodes. The three most common are A. melanoxylon, A. decurrens and A. longifolia. Joe

It most resembles Acacia melanoxylon in my opinion, a commonly grown very drought tolerant species seen in older gardens and often naturalized here in northern California. It is probably most useful for a boundary tree where you don't want to irrigate, or for screening purposes, it is often used in freeway plantings here. The wood is actually quite popular in Bali for decorative craft bowls and such, and it was surprising to me to find that this tree species grows as well in the humid tropics as it does in a Mediterranean climate. There are two forms of leaves as explained by others, the phyllodes are the mature foliage, the dissected leaves are the juvenile foliage. You may need to watch out for this tree, as it volunteers from seed very readily and can become a pest if allowed to get established.
