| No, leave it alone. Most banana species will have the fruiting stalk die after it blooms/fruits, but most will by then also have new shoots from the base to continue growing. There are some types of ornamental bananas that do not form offshoots, such as Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii' with beautiful reddish purple foliage, that seldom offset new plants. Fruiting on most bananas is a function of it reaching a large enough size to flower and fruit. In some zone 10 conditions like here in coastal northern California, the summer/fall nights are a little too cool to sufficiently ripen the fruit before winter comes, and the fruit is seldom good eating. It is much easier to get edible bananas if you live in hotter zone 10 conditions with warm summer nights. |
