Goats

We have just got back from Rhodes and have decided not to do much planting until we have tried to sort the goat problem. We are going back shortly and will be living there permanently
The people renting a nearby villa woke up to find a pig swimming in the pool and two goats asleep on the sun loungers!
At the moment there is a 1.2 metre wire fence and we have planted about 150 oleanders, 75cm apart which we are told once matured are reasonably goat proof.
However we have been told goats are very inventive and think nothing of jumping on each others backs to get over higher fences. As we have wonderful views, we do not want to make a higher fence.
I presume as they jump, electrifying the fence will not work. We have seen electronic scarers for deer etc.Do they work?

Can anyone give any advice.

Thanks

Barlews

RE: Goats

Hello-

I live in Laguna Beach, California and goat herds are used to clear vegetaion because of wildfire fears. The goat herders use electronic fencing to keep the goats confined and the coyotes (wild dog-like predators) away from the baby goats. The fencing is movable and is charged with what look like automobile batteries. It may be the type of temporary fix you are looking for. I would be very cautious to respect the owners of the goats and other farm animals that stray onto your property, though. You might be financially liable for any livestock that is injured or destroyed on your property.
Thanks for the truly funny image of the pig in the swimming pool!!!

RE: Goats

We never had pigs or alike in the pool, but we also faced problems with goats and sheeps here in Portugal. A good talk to the owner did the trick. Also, it is prohibited to let your animals onto other people's properties. Don't know if you have similar laws in Greece?
