fuchsias in central spain

My son would like to grow fuchsias near seville. A UK expert says that this may not be possible because of high temperatures. Any experience of this situation? when would be the best time for propagation? All help gratefully received

I would have thought it might be more a question of available water than temperature.

Many of the species are hardy to zones 10 and 11, and are pretty, though not as extravagantly petalled as many of the hybrids.

If you go to the 'main' Garden Web, look under Fuchsias and find a link to 'the bonsai fuchsia lady' - she's UK based and is a fount of wisdom on matters Fuchsia. She has her own web-site and will answer questions.

I am in Catalunya, North East, Spain. Fushia cuttings have been a permanent feature of my UK garden, and so I tried them last year in Spain. They were fine until the local sheep got them!

If you can grow them on the shadier side of the house they should cope well with ambient heat; they do not like endless sunshine and should be watered frequently.

Here in Cantabria fuchsias grow incredibly well. They need regular watering (even in Green Spain) and survive the winters with no problems. Apart from watering they seem to need little care although if you have frosts it is best to wrap them in winter. We have made a fuchsia hedge along the side of the garden and we have bright red pendants for ten months of the year. Cuttings are really easy and we have propagated for free.
