Denmark hedgerow rose- large hips

A customer is trying to identify a very "fat-hipped rose" she saw lining fields outside Copenhagen,45 years ago. "The hips were very large, plum sized, but squat and flattened. They were juicy-- can't imagine anyone getting rosehip jams or other products from anything except this rose- yet I have never seen it elsewhere." We have ruled out R. rugosa, R. canina,Rosa moyseii, and medlars. Does anyone know this rose? She later said it was low growing- to maybe 4ft. Thanks.

RE: Denmark hedgerow rose- large hips

I notice you have ruled out rugosa but nevertheless this rose sounds very much like Fru Dagmar Hastrup, a Danish rose from 1914. It is a lowgrowing rugosa (a chance seedling from the species R. rugosa). Flowers are single, light pink and appear all season, also along with the fat hips in autumn.
