This follows a request for advice; many thanks Alois4 and Field for your comments. Looks as if Allium Tuberosum is good, Lavender not so good. What about tomatoes?

What does allium tuberosum look like above the ground? I mean lavender is decorative and the colour is nice with roses, chives are, well, chives, green , you can have mint with blue flowers... Also does allium tuberosum smell strong ? Perhaps that is what makes it work as a repellent ? But next to heavenly smelling roses it might be a disadvantage ?

Garlic chives (Allium tuberosum) is a grassy-looking plant with narrow, flat leaves 35-40 cm tall. The plant is very similar to and can be used in cooking much like the better known kitchen chives (Allium schoenoprasum), but garlic chives is a little taller, has a mild added garlic scent, and has edible white flowers. Kitchen chives has lilac-colored flowers and small, rounded leaves. Neither type of chives has much noticeable odor in the garden.

I heard that planting garlic chives near roses will help ward off thrips. Good luck choosing plants!

No, garlic chives will eliminate spider mites. They may have some beneficial effect but there's no reliable evidence they will actually ward off thrips or any other insect.
