How Soon Do Roses Come To the United States?

| I saw a rose named Hope and Glory on a United Kingdom site. This rose is beautiful and I would love to get one. Are there ever roses that never make their way across the ocean? If they do make it to the U.S., how long can it take before they became available here? Thanks. |

| This is an American problem, not European. Tantau is a German firm that does sell their roses in the US so you could perhaps suggest to one of the North American rose firms that usually sell roses from Tantau that they import this rose. I know Palatine Roses carry several Tantau varieties. 'Hope and Glory' is a new rose, from 2007, also called 'Piano'. |

| Some roses never make it across the pond (either way). If you don't want to wait for this rose to be introduced to the US market, you could get an import license and ask Tantau to ship them. They do this if you can provide them with the correct paperwork. This is usually not much of a problem, but your imported roses have to stay in quarantine for a few years in your garden, i.e. in a certain distance to other roses/plant, and an inspector will swing by once in a while to check on them ( he/she will also come by before you receive them). I know several people in the US who have done this, most actually successfully, some not. Customs can be a problem - one huge group order from Loubert-France once took several months to get to the US (was stuck in customs NY), and needless, to say, the plants weren't of much use anymore. But most of the times it seems to work. You'll find some of the people who have imported roses on the main/American rose forum, just repost your question if you like. Sometimes, Canadian nurseries such as Hortico or Pickering get these roses first, you could also check with them. That being said, Hortico is not the most reliable vendor, but they have a huge selection, also of hard to find (and new European) roses. Andrea |

Dear Mariannese and Andreageorgia, Thank you for your help. I will repost on the American forum to see what I can come up with. Thanks for your information! I didn't realize it could be that complicated. |
