Will climbers damage cottage's foundation?

I'm new to the forums & have searched but can't find an exact answer to my query in past postings. Can anyone help resolve a disagreement between me and my husband? Last year we bought a 17th century stone cottage, and I've bought a climbing rose (Etoile de Holland) to train against the cottage's south-facing back wall. But my husband wants me to put it in a container instead of the soil, afraid its roots will bring moisture under the foundations or do some other mayhem. Our cottage is built straight onto soil, with no basement. I've got a wisteria Sinensis to go against the same wall -- will either it or the rose cause damage? Help!

No Sheila, And by the way, there are many cottages to be seen in the british isles with climbers on their walls... What could really damage a house are giant ramblers like R.Filipes Kiftsgate, not a "Etoile de Hollande". I have a "Mme Alfred Carrière" engulfing the roof of my house. Best wishes, Pete.

You get it from me, Sheila, And yes, Soff, MAC sometimes tries to send new canes between the roof and the wall....I simply check once a year at pruning time, and "just say no". With a Felco she does not try to discuss. But Sheila talks about a "Etoile de Hollande", which is not as vigourous. Best wishes, Pete.
