Best Rose Garden Tour

I would love some feedback on which garden tour is the best to see roses! I would like to visit David Austin
in Shropshire, but may have to add that to the trip if it
is not included. Any suggestions or thoughts would be much appreciated. I am most interested in tours of England and France.

Thank you ~ Susan

It's taken so long for anyone to reply that Susan has probably made her trip (in June, no doubt?). In case she hasn't: the No. 1 rose garden to visit here in England is Mottisfont in Hampshire, which houses the National Collection of old roses. It does get extremely busy in June, though. There is a substantial list of English rose gardens in the back of Peter Beales' Classic Roses.

I have noticed generally that the autumn flowering of remontant roses has been extremely good this year, presumably because the plants shut off during the drought in summer and are now catching up. Here in London a great array of plants is in full flower still.

I was lucky to visit Queen Mary's Rose Garden in Regent's Park, London, on Oct 13. It was in full bloom, or almost, because the climbers were already pruned and tied in. I first visited this park in June 2004 and saw the climbers and the once-blooming roses. But it was still a dream for a northern rose grower. We've had roses up till two weeks ago, but nothing like in London.

Call me a snob, but I don't like Queen Mary's Rose Garden because of all those big beds of brassy, scentless hybrid teas. It does have a selection of "proper" roses, it's true, and now that it has its Austin bed (but north-facing, poor thing) ...

I don't call myself a snob and I grow three hybrid teas among my 170 varieties of old and species roses, Madame Caroline Testout, Elina and Rose Gaujard (but I admit the last was a mislabeled rose). I have very few Austins, only Abraham Darby and Constance Spry. I have 26 different gallicas, perhaps the class I have most of.
