Roses and shade

| I've seen comments about roses which do well in 'partial shade'.
I'm a beginner. Not sure what partial shade means. My specific question is: are some roses happy in a situation where they get perhaps 2 to 3 hours morning sun, then are in the shade (but get plenty of warmth and reflected light) for the rest of the day? Any advice on which types? |

| One rose often mentioned as able to stand less than ideal light conditions is the climbing bourbon Zéphirine Drouhin. The alba class is generally considered tolerant of less light. |

| Thanks, Mariannese. I had a look at Zéphirine Drouhin and it looks ideal in size, habit and toughness. I'll get it in the autumn. I might even plant it near an Alba or two, as they look as if they'd set each other off nicely. I have a gable end to play on, with a woodshed projecting from it so that there are several angles to cover. |

| Robin, as this forum is quite inactive I suggest you join the general rose forum. It's dominated by Americans but they live in different climates, some very similar to your mediterranean (or rather, portuguese) climate and there are some members from Italy as well. I think they would suggest that you try some of the true teas (not hybrid teas) that are ideal for hot climates. Marianne in Sweden (who gets the occasional chance to prune roses in Greece) |

| Thanks, Marianne. I had no idea there were so many forums - and 11 of them devoted to roses. I'm about to post a request for help in identiying a rose on the main rose forum. Looking at the list of roses you grow, you probably have it somewhere in that half acre . You have TIME to go prune roses in Greece too? |

| Our rose growing season is short, so when it's over I can go on holiday. I have friends with a garden on the island of Aegina and they let me prune their roses whenever I visit which is not very often. This year my husband went alone to Greece and did the pruning. Our first roses are just starting to flower, species and near species hybrids. The main flush is in June-July. In an exceptionally warm autumn we may have roses in November but usually the season is over in October. The rest of the year I don't garden much, just remove heavy snow from evergreens. |

| Interesting. I got used to gardening in the UK, where most of us put the garden to bed in late autumn, just tidying it, and do little or nothing till late February or March. But in Portugal there seems to be something growing all the time. The roses don't seem to go dormant till about January, and start growing again in March. The olives are harvested in November, the loquats flower in December and ripen in April, the oranges start flowering in April but the fruit don't finish until May or even June ... and so on. I have trouble keeping up! I've posted my identification problem in the Name That Rose forum :) |
