Roses suddenly blooming!

I've inherited a front garden with some roses in. No idea what. They're all quite old (the bottoms are knarled and huge!). They've done pretty badly so far this year (as they did last year) despite a damn good pruning in early spring - my last ditched attempt before digging them up. I have had a big ant problem this year in the front garden, I'm sure the little luvvies have their nest near roses...

But...since the weather in Europe took a turn for the Saharan, the ants have disappeared and the roses in the front garden have positively bloomed! Owing to a broken side gate throughout the whole 35C weeks the front garden didn't get watered (oops...the lilly has died!) - not that I watered it a lot before (bad gardener..). But the roses are looking superb. Really healthy new leaf growth (the old ones are yellowing, spotted and half dead), and lots of new flower buds.

I'm at a loss to know what's happened! Is the ant disappearance a co-incidence or were they munching my roses? I'm not complaining mind..the roses look lovely, I'm just puzzled as to the dramatic and sudden change in my rose's appearance!

Any ideas?
Alcina

Maybe your roses were some type of China hybrid that prefer hot weather? Or Noisettes???
