| Yes my "Sticks" came!!! After 26 days in a packet!!! They were almost rotten, but worst of all, the roots had been chopped off ...were only 2-3 inches long! I have never seen so bad bareroot "roses" in my life!!!! but off course that makes them easier to send. I soaked the Sticks for 24 hours and used a secateur to cut away the rotten canes, and was left with 5 inch sticks, that looked like Dahlia bulbs. I planted the sticks with the bud-union 3-4 inches below the soil, and marked the burial-sites with markers so I could see where I had buried the sticks ( I refuse to call them roses). Maybe they will form some sort of roots and shoot in the spring ... miracles do happen!!! Last time I will order "roses" from Meilland-Richardier!!!! But not the last Meilland roses I will buy ...I will wait until the varieties I want are available for sale from a local supplier. |

| It seems to be the continental way to chop off the roots. I had 16 roses from Martin Weingart in Germany in April. They had been under way for less than a week so they were quite healthy but the roots were poor, hardly visible on some of the plants. Two plants died almost at once, one in a pot, the other in the ground, but the rest grew beautifully. I am expecting 12 roses from Loubert in France in spring so I am a bit apprehensive. But I have asked Louberts to contact me before shipping so I am sure to be at home when the roses arrive. |

| Only half the roses I bought has shown some growth now and only small 5-8 inch shoots that will not flower. I actually expect even those roses to die. I was right ... it was the worst quality of bare root roses I have ever seen. It was a total waste of money and time to buy roses of such poor quality from Meilland-Richardier. I will not even bother complaining since I will probably only get the typical arrogant french reply. 200 euros poorer ... and will never buy anything from France Again. |

| My experience with the roses I had from from Loubert in April was better. All 7 are doing very well, including the gallica 'Léa' that took so long to leaf out that I was beginning to worry. The packing was a dream, a large box full of green moss, damp and scented like a French forest, the plants large and with good roots. 'Bijou des amateurs' will have one or two flowers any day now. |

As far as my experience goes, it is not a common continental way to chop off the roots. There could be some root cutting, but not necessarily. All bareroot roses I mailordered this year were delievered in a wonderfull quality with complete roots. I have ordered from three different suppliers in Germany. cupshaped_roses, how do your Meilland roses, which have been really cruelly treated, do? |

| This is good to know, I was just about to order from Meilland-Richardier! I better see if I can find nurseries in other European countries that carry Meilland's creations. In the US, I had a few of their roses, and they were lovely, especially Rouge Royale/Alain Souchon. Andrea (Cambridge, UK) |

nasraa: I decided to move the "Le rosiers Miserable" last fall: Turned out the rootstock where dead on all the roses, but some of the canes had rooted themselves. So Now I have one Ownroot Alain Souchon/rouge Royale. I finally got the roses replaced by MR. The new roses came after 4 days and was a better quality, this spring. But still almost no roots?!? This time I potted 5 of them, so they can grow some roots, before I will plant them in the fall. Roses from Germany and Denmark Are most often excellent quality!!! I hope that all the wonderful Meilland roses will become available on multiflora rootstocks, from a German or Danish Nursery. Happy to hear you had better luck than me Marianne. |

| Hello Niels, I just saw your post and am very sorry you had that terrible experience with MR. We got a dozen bare-root roses from them about 8 years ago and they were absolutely fine, but then we were in France and mail delivery is very fast here. I am hesitant to suggest this, as I would not want to be responsible for another fiasco, but we have used a French mail order supplier several times with excellent results. I just checked and they have all the Meilland varieties you originally mentioned and it looks like they ship to Denmark. Their customer service is good, they respond to e-mails, the plants have always been great, we even had fruit trees shipped to us. It is my understanding that they have agreements with a number of specialist nurseries in different geographical locations, so your order would be filled by the nearest applicable supplier. I have no idea how this would work for Denmark, but this company sent us the Meilland roses Andre le Notre and The McCartney Rose when we were living in Italy and they are both monsters, 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide. If you are comfortable dealing in French, and wanted to have a look, try here. All the best! MayBee |

| Thank you for Writing MayBee. The new roses I got replaced by MR were with avec motte or was it sans? They had a peat ball with mesh net around the roots - If we can actually call it roots. This time they came in 4 days and like I said I removed the peat balls and saw that they have almost no roots - at least they were not completely rotten like the other roses I got 2 years ago. I potted them in very large pots - 5 roses in each - and they have all survived - growing nice canes and they have even flowered! Later this fall I will plant them in the ground, because I know they will make it - now that they have grown a better root system. I think that these bare root roses with almost no roots (they have been cut off) are do not have a chance to make it if fall planted up here north, like we almost always do. Perhaps spring planting will be better - something to think about for others who buy roses from MR. I simply love many of the Meilland roses! Like Tantau Roses they are very healthy and many of them are very fragrant and great for cutting. So nothing wrong with Meilland roses - only the quality of plants I got was unacceptable. Thank you for giving me the name of this other mailorder company MayBee. I still want some Meilland roses in the fall - and I have friends who speak french well - they work at the French Embassy In Copenhagen. I never learned French - but speak and write German. I have however decided to learn some French - so I can at least carry a little conversation in French when I come to France. Also thanks for visisting my blog - hope you enjoy the summer! |
