Stagshorn Fern

Last spring I bought a Stagshorn fern, which looked sort of "indoors only" so I hung it in the greenhouse where it grew huge - 4ft across!

Actually it became to big it was a nuisence so I left it in the unheated greenhouse over winter - couldn't bring that size in!

Now it has noticed spring is on it's way and is growing again already -eek! It never goes as low as zero in the unheated greenhouse, but must drop to just 1 or 2 degrees some nights - How cold do these obviously not really particularly tropical fern's survive in?

RE: Stagshorn Fern

I presume you have Platycerium bifurcatum and yes they do get big don't they.
It would be best to grow it outside in a sheltered spot to protect from winds and only partial sunlight.
They are a member of the fern family and are epiphitic (Air)perennials native to jungle in Africa Madagasca,Australia Tropical Asia and Preu. From what I've read it seems our climate is fine for outdoor growing so if it gets to big then perhaps that's the best course of action.
I presume they survive by the fact that they are perennial and have a dormant period in colder temps.
Of course in the greenhouse this gives them some protection from freezing and therfore being killed even if it is only just above freezing. I would certainly try it outside, particularly if it starts to become a problem on the size front. Good luck.
