The Garden - A work of art?

| Hey
Im a student studying garden design and i was interested in peoples opinions on the following subject matter (it is what im doing my dissertation about!)
Can the garden be viewed as a work of art? Can you look at the garden in the same way as a painting or a piece of sculpture? Would you view it differently and why would this be?
Any views, criticism etc would be highly appreciated! |

| Sure, it is in every way equivalent to more conventional forms of art. It is also a more difficult form since the elements of the design change continuously. |

| A garden is a work of Nature crafted by man. |

| The beauty of a garden as an art form is that it is constantly changing, as different plants grow, or are replaced, or the seasons change, whereas more conventional art forms - eg. painting or a piece of sculpture, although beautiful, will always be the same. |

| Yes, I certainly consider a garden to be a work of art; A creation designed carefully to inspire feeling is how I would define a work of art, and a garden is definitely that! |

| Certainly. Garden design is as much art as architecture and the design of individual plantings is as much art as other artistic creations in colour and form. Unfortunately, I am not very talented myself but, luckily, nature is a creative partner. |

| I'd say it can be viewed as an art too although ours is the artistic equivalent of a 6 years olds painting pinned on the school walls on parents evening or if we were saleable artists you might list it under Primative. We like it but we're not going to win any design awards. |
