Alocasia as indoor plant

Posted by calathea (My Page) on

Hello, I am new here and to the UK so please forgive the silliness of the questions...

I am looking for a reliable supplier of Alocasia/Colocasia (preferably grown plants but would settle for tubers if nothing else is available) with a good range of plants. I am looking for an indoor Alocasia/Colocasia- something like Grandis, possibly.

I have searched the obvious on the Web (houseofplants, urbanjungle) but I would prefer having the possibility of seeing/examining the plant before buying it... and I live in Hampshire.

Any suggestion?

Many thanks for whatever time you will be able to devote to answering this!

RE: Alocasia as indoor plant

I think you will find getting grown plants difficult right now as growers would need to be keeping them in tropically-heated greenhouses and it's too early to start selling these tender plants. Wait a few months and I think they will be more readily available. However tubers are available right now at Indian/African stores, some big supermarkets and Wilko's/Wilkinson's. Named varieties cn be got from exotic nurseries like Jungle Seeds and Amulree Exotics at Turn-It-Tropical.co.uk. They may well be able to sell you one in leaf.
For more info you could ask on the Growing on the Edge Forum.

Here is a link that might be useful: Jungle Seeds
