Any idea what 'conklin-coloured yams' might mean?

Someone found the expression in a novel. The spelling suggests UK, perhaps.

Never heard of the word 'conklin' before. The only thing it reminds me at all of is 'conker' which is a word for the large seeds of a horse-chestnut tree. I doubt there's a link between the two, though.

I googled it expecting to be directed straight to this thread. However, there appears to have been an agricultural researcher called Mr Conklin who might have had a special interest in yams! He published studies of Asian/African agriculture in the 1950s.
