I want to create a wildlife area near my pond and am thinking of planting wild bird seed, not sure what will happen if anything...anyone tried it???(

Well.. we used to get small crops of wheat under the bird feeders, but the birds didn't go for this much.

I'd reckon you're better off planting some teasel and sunflowers for birds. And some good berrying shrubs if you have the room..

I think you can probably grow those sunflowers cheaply from your bird seed, as mine germinated in the borders before the snails came along and ate every last seedling. The RSPB has some advice on gardening with birds in mind.

Here is a link that might be useful: RSPB - What to Plant

Teasel yes, but not sunflowers, they don't ripen very well in the UK climate and often rot in wet late autumn weather before the seeds are mature enough to be edible.

If there's a tree or a bare wall nearby, plant some ivy - abundant insect food in Nov-Dec and berries Jan-Mar, excellent for attracting e.g. wintering Blackcaps.
