planting potatoes

I have seed potatoes sitting chitting in egg boxes waiting for warmer weather and they have produced lots of long spindly shoots waving all over my hallway. Customary planting day of March 21st looks not so useful as temperature plunges yet again. Does anyone else have experience of planting potatoes that are horribly overdue?

RE: planting potatoes

You do not say in which part of the UK you are gardening. Here in the lothians, in my case near Edinburgh, I do not plant potatoes until 'six weeks before the May term'ie middle of April. Would suggest that you keep your chitting potatoes in a cool well lit situation. Alternatively you could plant them and protect them with fleece or cloches.

Down here in the south we have also had a cold winter and I have yet to plant out the majority of my spuds. I have a few under fleece and plan to put the rest out over the next couple of weeks. They'll catch up soon enough.
