watch out for rosemary beetles

After our lily beetle 'red alert' recently I noticed a rosemary beetle grub on the rosemary bush, the first in a long while. People in areas affected by this pest might want to start checking their plants. Rosemary and lavender seem to attract them en masse, but they may also be found on other members of the Lamiaceae family - I think my hyssop was attacked by them last year.

RE: watch out for rosemary beetles

Hi lori, Iused to live in "The Smoke". I've never heard of rosemary beetles. I thought this shrub was so tough that nothing ate it other than humans. What do they look like?

They are a relatively new pest but made it into the RHS's top ten pest enquiries pretty quickly. They only became a problem for me about 2 years ago but did a lot of damage before I noticed them. They are quite pretty beetles in adult form, they look bronze from a distance but closeup they have purple and green stripes going along the length of their body. Their larvae have grey stripes. The info on the following page doesn't have very good pictures but it does give you an idea of the way they have spread.

Here is a link that might be useful: Rosemary beetle info

Thanks lori, I live near Southampton and there appears to be a colony there.(according to the map) I'll have to keep an eye out for them.

RE: watch out for rosemary beetles

Yesterday, May 7th, we found the first adult rosemary beetles here in North Norfolk. None last year, but the same plant had twenty the year before. Yesterday I picked a dozen, today another six. Is hand-picking the only option now, while there might be bees about ? Does anyone know of another treatment ?

Hi Malcolm, you could try spraying with Provado in the evening when the bees are gone, good luck
