Hi! I read an article a while ago about growing tomatoes and cucumbers on/in straw bales instead of a grow bag. The bale was prpeared by soaking it and starting the composting process. The decomposing bale provided heat and nutrients for the plant which encouraged excellent growth. My question is has anyone tried this and in particular have you tried it with squash plants?
Any comments greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ryvoan.
You can grow squash plants as you have asked. To make straw absolutley superb to use as a growing medium use the bail as a place to, um, piss on (yes, i do mean urinate all over it) trust me, it works
I have spent about three weeks with approximately 2 bales of straw that also had a small amount of goat manure mixed with it to begin. I have used copious amounts of water as well as what Lawrence Hills called HLANo.1 (Human Liquid Activator No.1. I estimate it might be about half way there, and daytime temperatures are in the low 20sC. Do a search on preparing mushroom compost from straw (for growing white button mushrooms) and you should get some good info. Old McDonald.
I have also heard of people using this method to grow potatoes with great success. It would be worth it to save the digging to get to potatoes using the traditional method...
