verbascums

I was wondering what Uk gardeners experiences of this are;
I planted my first ones ever last spring (3 of them - small garden). Nice plants flowered in the summer, but only 1 out of the 3 are showing any signs of life/new foilage this spring. They are perennials, not bienniels if you are wondering. Do you think the other 2 have had it? As I have a small garden I can't reserve the space much longer, I need to dig them out this weekend and plant something else if this is the case. Advice anyone?

Which Verbascums are they? There are so many species, and even more hybrids and cultivars. The perennial types, though, can be short lived, even when given the right conditions, but they should not have reached the end of their lifespan yet. I have V. michauxii which has been prospering in my poorly-drained heavy silt for some years now. It makes me nervous every spring, but ends up putting in an explosive appearance at the end of May. So it might help to be patient.

RE: verbascums

I grew some from seed a few years ago and they did very well. I'm pretty sure they were Unwins 'Sunset Shades'. They certainly came up for a couple of years and flowered nicely, but then I moved house and left them behind.
I seem to recall that the foliage was visible all winter, so if there is no sign of anything, I imagine they are dead.

No idea whether verbascums suffer from replant disease, so not sure whether it would be a good idea to plant more in the same place.
