Irish Thistle

Greetings from the other side of the pond. I recently received a new gift catalog from the Shannon airport. On the cover is what they call a thistle vase, made of Waterford crystal. (I'm not interested. Too expensive.) In the vase are lovely blue flowers, similar looking to cosmos. The buds have the pine cone shape that cirsiums and centaureas have. The stems look quite stiff & the leaves appear thick. Can anyone identify this plant for me? Is it an invasive weed or something I might want to try to grow here ? Thanks !

Any chance of posting a picture of the vase of flowers. I've had a look at the Shannon airport website, but they don't have any pictures of their gift catalogue.

Sounds like the sort of plant that I might want to grow as well.

Probably comes from the same place as that butterfly, i.e. definitely not Waterford - or Ireland - or the British Isles ...

If it tells you where the catalogue was designed or printed, that might give you a clue as to where the flower might have come from. Or where the person who dreamed it up came from, anyway.

Hmmmm, I quite agree!

The 'thistles' just make me laugh, but the flowers in the vase are more intriguing. They do look just like cosmos. I've never seen one that colour though. I wonder whether they've been dyed, or perhaps just touched up digitally. You could try the 'name that plant' forum.

I have been trying to identify the small blue flowers hidden amoungst the shamrocks. Vetch perhaps? It's difficult to see clearly.
