RE: black bees

There are a number of UK mining bee species that commonly nest in lawns, although other types of solitary bee may dig holes in your lawn too. If they are small and completely black then it is likely one of the Micrandrena mining bees, or possibly one of the leaf-cutter bees. You would mistake them for flies at first glance. The larger mining bees all have some brown markings, and the arrangement of brown and black bits lets you know the species.
