Jasmine hardiness

I planted two Jasminum polyanthus out in my garden last year and we had a severe frost a while back that I reckon may have killed them, but I'm not sure. I checked on the web and it said that it's from China and hardy to -18 C and I doubt it got past -2 C, yet I can't help but worry that they are done for. I have them each planted in either corner of my back garden, between my fence and a wall.

J. polyanthum is only hardy down to around 0C. J. polyanthum is often sold as an indoor pot plant. I think you may have found info. on J. officionale (-5C) or J. nudiflorum (-15C). However, in your area they might survive. I would wait and see before giving up on them. They can be grown in my area in shelterd urban back yards.

I just went to Dublin last week and saw that all of the jasmines there were still alive and blooming, just like mine was a few months ago. Yet when I look on the hardiness map, I am supposedly in a higher zone than Dublin. I don't get it. Obviously it didn't get as cold there as it did here. Is that because all of the houses so close together sheltered them? I live in an estate in a small town, it's not like I live out in the country. They both survived last winter so here I was thinking that they would survive every winter. Silly me.

J. polyanthum isn't hardy to -18C but it can do better than -2C. Probably it starts to suffer damage at about -2C. I have one right next to the house, it gets some frosted leaves each winter and has been down to -7C but it is still alive. These flower very early, mine had flowers in January, but the frosts in February killed them all. It might put out some more later in the year.

Yes, it was the same February frosts that did mine in, too. They were so lovely, still in bloom and looking beautiful before they turned brown and took on all manner of looking dead. I wonder if it is because mine are down at the end of the garden whereas yours is next to the house. I thought that they would be happier there because they are snuggled into a corner next to a wall. Have yours ever turned brown?

Yes, they get burnt leaves every winter but the plant has survived so far.
