 o
David Austin roses - found some at cheap prices

Posted by amanda1 SE England (My Page) on

I love David Austin roses, but they are quite expensive. I was therefore delighted to find some in Sainsbury's for £5. Only 4 varieties, but better than nothing. I have also found some in a nursery near me for £6. Does anyone know of any other places where you can buy them at these sort of prices? I'd be very interested to know.

I don't have much experience with these roses. Can anybody recommend a few varieties that would be good to start with. Easy reliable and disease free would be nice with good repeat flowering and scent.

Thanks

You can buy direct from David Austin's website - at the moment they are selling bare-root roses for £ 5. Technically it's getting a tad late for planting but at that price I've bought 3 to see how they get on.

I bought some about 5-6 years ago. Some of them are still going but they have never looked anything like the lush plantings you see at the DA premises! But maybe I've just been mean to them!

David Austin himself recommends that several varieties be planted in groups of three plants to make a full bush. Others make a lush shrub on their own but don't ask me which of them. I grow only one Austin and Abraham Darby is a lush plant. I saw a huge planting of lollipops on sticks at the rosarium in Glucksburg, Germany, mostly older Austin varieties, looking no better than the average hybrid tea.

Amanda

I am writing regarding my daughter, Grace. She will be visiting south east England, mid August and first week in Sept. We are Canadian
She is a gardener and loves roses.
She has relatives to visit and will of course be looking at gardens.

Don't know if you might like to email her as to things she might see while there

She should go to Mottisfont Abbey, Near Romsey, Hants
