Anyone growing Lady Boothby Fuchsia

Posted by plantzzman UK (My Page) on Sun, Apr 29, 07 at 20:32
I was wondering if anyone was having a go with Lady Boothby the CLIMBING Fuchsia which seems to have suddenly cropped up in magazines, newspapers and on the web in the UK?
The nursery I work for deal with a supplier of this plant and the sales rep seemed surprised we did not place an order for some cuttings for our 2007 sales.
We looked through the catalogue and laughed when we got to lady boothby and turned over the page.
Who in their right mind thought this was a climbing plant? Where are its tendrils? where are its twining stems? its nothing more than some lanky fuchsia nobody has bothered with for the last 60 odd years that needs sticks to stop it flopping over.
What ever next !!!

I haven't grown it, but it's handy knowing the little marketing tricks that are used so I won't be conned in future!

Saw a number of these in a local Nursery staffed by people with Learning Difficulties. I shop there as much as possible as it's a charity so thought I'd give this oddity a go. I live in Kent, garden is mostly chalky/clay, and lots of tree-shade. So I've put the Lady up against a part-sun fence with some wire supports and she's made about 3 inches growth in 10 days and some new shoots from the base. Will let you know how she fares!

Lady Boothby is very interesting variety and a constant bloomer. It ramples up more than 2m.

I have grown 8 of these this year and I love them. I grew three in a large container with a pyramid support and they look lovely.
